2274 The Sallow - Xanthia ictertia.

Trapped - Melbourne, Derbyshire - August 2002 left & 2003 right.
A widely distributed species in Derbyshire, being generally fairly common. Again, most numerous in the southern Trent Valley area. Usually unmistakable, the Sallow has slightly hooked-tipped forewings and a dark almost black spot to the kidney mark. There can be a huge difference in the array of markings on the upper -forewing. The ground colour however does appear a canary yellow, rather than an orange-yellow as in Pink-barred.
On the wing from September - October.

Food plant - The catkins of sallows & poplars, later a range of herbaceous plants.
