2375 Large Wainscot - Rhizedra lutosa.
Trapped - Melbourne, Derbyshire - September 2004. An uncommon and locally distributed species in Derbyshire. It is found in areas where its food plant, the Common Reed occurs. However it prefers to inhabit the drier areas of reed beds where periodic drying out or lowering of water levels produce sparse areas of stunted growth. It also has a habit of wandering from the preferred habitat, hence turning up in my garden, which is nowhere near any reed beds!
Note the pointed wing tips and outer series of fine dots. It also lacks the small blackish dashes or crescents along the outer edge of the forewing, as in Bulrush Wainscot. A pleasant surprise in my garden trap and probably the most unusual species trapped in my garden so far this year. On the wing from late August to October.
Food plant - Common Reed.
