ABOUT

2379 Small Rufous - Coenobia rufa.

Trapped - Toyota Site, Derbyshire. July 28th 2004.

According to Butterflies & Moths of Derbyshire 1986 - This species was no longer present in the county. There were only 2 previous records, 1866 Repton; 1885 Little Eaton.

This specimen, I believe, represents the first record for Derbyshire since the 2 mentioned above. The body was slim and the wings rounded and less pointed than Small Wainscot. Note the narrow and slightly diffused central streak on the forewing, with further streaks radiating out to the outer edge. The upper wing shows a subtle pinkish brown colouration, dusted finely with light and dark grey. The hindwings were silvery greyish-white. Unfortunately this specimen was slightly worn but nevertheless the key features are all visible in the photographs.

On the wing from July - August

Food plant - Jointed Rush, Sharp-flowered Rush and Soft Rush.
