ABOUT

1884 Magpie - Abraxas grossulariata.

Trapped - Melbourne, Derbyshire July 2005
.

Widely distributed and locally common in Derbyshire. However, this species seems much less common that during my youth in the late 60‘s & 70‘s !!. The species occurs in all areas of the county but its largest colonies seem to be concentrated i9n urban areas of the Coal Measures of central Derbyshire and in the valleys of the Trent & Derwent. This specimen was a first for the Graden in 3 years of trapping !!. On the wing from May - early July..

Food plant - Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Midland Hawthorn, Dogwood, Garden Privet and a wide range of other shrubs.
