ABOUT

2319 Lunar-spotted Pinion - Cosmia pyralina.

Trapped - Kings Newton, Derbyshire August 2004
.

Described in “The Butterflies & Moths of Derbyshire 1986” - Harrison & Sterling, as possibly a former resident but no longer present in Derbyshire. 1 record prior to 1870, there had been no further records. In 1995 the Moth list for Derbyshire was updated and still no appearance of this species.
I can only assume that this species has either been overlooked and under recorded or is a new species for Derbyshire. The first record to my knowledge is of a dead specimen found in the bottom of a garden trap in Kings Newton 8.7.2003. The next specimen was trapped at Kings Newton Fields on 11.7.2003 about half a mile from the previous record. Further records from the same garden at Kings Newton are 18.7.2003; 27.7.2004; 11.8.2004 and 13.7.2005. TD/WS
On the wing from July and August.

Food plant - Blackthorn, hawthorn, apple and elms.
