ABOUT

St.Agnes, the most westerly island of the Isles of Scilly archipelago, presents not only good birding but for the moth enthusiast, a superb place for moth trapping, in ideal conditions. Unfortunately, unlike 2003, the weather conditions during my week this year were atrocious. We only had one day of mothing opportunity which was on the 11th October. The wind swung briefly to the south and we had calm conditions overnight.

Due to the weather, we only trapped on 4 occasions. One night we had just one Large Yellow Underwing!!. A Mercury Vapour Light and Skinner Trap was used on the evenings of 10th; 11th; 12th and 14th October. On the 12th we ran an additional trap on the campsite at Troy Town in addition to our usual location at Troy Town Farm, St. Agnes, Isles of Scilly.

The following table on page 2 shows the results of the four traps, along with a selection of images of the better moths that were caught. I would like to thank Dave Scattergood and Keith Tailby for their help and assistance during the week.
