1984 Hummingbird Hawkmoth - Macroglossum stellatarum.

St.Agnes, Isles of Scilly - October 2003.
Melbourne, Derbyshire - July 2004

A regular immigrant from southern Europe and North Africa. Most numerous in southern Britain but in good migrant years can reach almost any part of the UK. In Derbyshire the species is an uncommon migrant, being recorded from May onwards. Most specimens being recorded from late August. The species is being recorded with more regularity in recent years, so may not all be down to migrants.
I have recorded this species three times in my garden in southern Derbyshire since 2003.

The species may also over-winter on the Isles of Scilly.
Usually observed during the day.
On the wing from April - December with most immigrants arriving in Aug- Sept.

See Isles of Scilly moth section.

Food plant - Lady’s Bedstraw, Hedge Bedstraw and Wild Madder.

Melbourne, Derbyshire - July 2004
