May 202012

Still the weather continues to be grey & cold for the middle of May, we have suffered for nearly three weeks now of miserable conditions.

Not very conducive to photography. It was so cold today at Frampton Marsh, Lincs, the Swallows were settling on vegetation to pick at small insects and Swifts were so low they were skimming over our heads. There was little insect activity in the air.

So it was I spent another day at one of my favourite sites. Early morning here and one has the place to oneself. We knew there were good birds about but we had to find them. Frampton has a number of excellent hides scattered around the reserve and from one of these hides I discovered a summer plumaged Black-necked Grebe. There was a good variety of spring waders on offer and most were in breeding plumage.
We found 8 Curlew Sandpiper, most were sporting their brick-red summer garb. Plenty of Dunlin & Ringed Plover, also about 70 Black-tailed Godwit, a single Common Sandpiper, a single Wood Sandpiper, 6 male Ruff, a single Temminck’s Stint (Boy of Boy this took some finding but my perseverance eventually paid off) 3 Little Stint, numerous Redshank, Avocet, Lapwing and a sprinkling of Oystercatcher and Turnstone. There were 4 1st summer Little Gulls hawking over the marsh, 2 drake Garganey, a few Corn Bunting, Yellow Wagtail and a purring Turtle Dove. So an excellent day and plenty of year ticks on offer.
The year list moves on to 208.
