ISLES OF SCILLY 2012 - 20th - 27th October

Our annual birding trip to the Isles of Scilly commenced on the evening of the 19th October. An overnight drive down to St. Just to catch our Skybus flight to St.Mary;’s on Saturday 20th October. This was to be my 26th consecutive year and our hopes were high as the weather forecast was predicting easterly winds all week. Although turning out to be a rather “Tame” week, we did see some good birds, even finding our own Olive-backed Pipit and Water Pipit. I had two Isles of Scilly ticks, taking my personal list to 290. St.Agnes from The Garrison, St.Mary's […]

Birding Shetland - September 22nd - 29th, 2012 - Unst

We arrived at Blackdog, Aberdeen at around 2pm on Friday 21st September 2012. A vast flock of Scoter and Eider duck were on the sea and after some careful searching, I eventually located the eclipse drake Surf Scoter amongst Common & Velvet Scoter. There were also numerous Red-throated Diver, 2 Arctic Skua, 7 Whooper Swan at sea, several skeins of Pink-footed Geese flying south and a fly-by Turtle Dove of all things. The trip had got off to a great start.   We were ready for another week, birding on the island of Unst, Shetland. The island of Unst is […]

Right Time - Right Place - Sunday 16th September 2012.

Local Patch Birding Really paid off to-day. Another early morning start at Carsington Water. After a walk around "Stones Island" and a visit to the main Wildlife Hide, we had seen very little. The regular adult Yellow-legged Gull and a few Chiffchaff and Blackcap. We then made our way to Sheepwash Hide and on arrival walked straight onto an adult Great White Egret. The bird was feeding in the bay and performed for around half an hour, long enough for me to run back to the car for my camera, before flying straight past the hide and disappearing down the […]

Local Patch Raptors - Sunday 9th September 2012

Local patch birding in my county of Derbyshire is hard work but sometimes rewarding. It is all down to the quality of birding one is looking for. In my view you cannot compare a days birding in Derbyshire, to a days birding at a coastal site in Norfolk or Yorkshire. These locations would win hands down, however there are exceptions and today was one of them. The early morning was spent at Carsington Water and a Turnstone, always a good bird in our county, a Wheatear and an adult Yellow-legged Gull were the major highlights. Yellow-legged Gull – Carsington Water, […]
