In the Company of Gulls

A fairly quiet weekend birdwise, so Saturday 30th November, we decided to head off to the North East Coast and Hartlepool Fish Quay, Hartlepool Headland and South Shields. A few good birds including numerous Purple Sandpiper, a huge flock of roosting Redshank at Sea Burn, Red-throated Diver, Common Scoter off Hartlepool Headland, a Long-tailed Duck, several drake Pintail at Saltholme and disappointly, a near encounter with an Ivory Gull. Unfortunately we were some 25 miles way when it flew north up the coast from Sea Burn Beach. By the time we got there the bird must have been many miles further […]

Parrots to Orphean in 24 hours

A cracking weekend – Saturday 23rd November, Glyn, Richard and myself decided to head off to Norfolk and try for the small flock of Parrot Crossbills that had been frequenting the Car Park of Holt Country Park. Our arrival was impeccable, as we pulled into the car park, bright sunshine, blue sky and nine Parrot Crossbill performing. No arguments with these birds, straight from Scandinavia or Northern Russia, big billed and a brute of a crossbill. A nice mixture of males, immature males and females, showed well for at least 45 minutes as they were feeding in oaks and pine trees around the […]

The Lincolnshire Coast in Late Autumn

A trip to the Lincolnshire Coast in late autumn is the right time to see Grey Seals at Donna Nook. This is a cracking site and often good birds can be found. We soon located the Long-tailed Duck which has been here for some time, along with a Red-necked Grebe. Amongst the numbers of Tufted Duck was a female Scaup and I also discovered a Purple Sandpiper amongst the 20 or so […]

Rare Wheatear found in Notts

An immature/female type Pied Wheatear was discovered and identified at Collingham Gravel Pits, near Newark, Nottinghamshire, on Saturday 9th November 2013. News came out late on Saturday evening. Yet another rare vagrant to grace the Midlands and hot on the heels of last weekends Dusky Warbler. Pied Wheatear is a vagrant from Eastern Europe and the desert areas of the Middle East, with immatures and females being notoriously difficult to identify. Fortunately the bird was still present this morning (Sunday 10th November) and in superb autumn sunshine, eventually, early on, gave good but rather distant views. Only occasionaly coming anywhere near […]
