70.190 BF1837 – Grey Pug – Geometridae – Eupithecia subfuscata

Grey PugGeometridae – Larentiinae – Eupithecia subfuscata – colour code

STATUSA resident and widely distributed species that is not uncommon across Derbyshire. Probably under recorded as it is not an easy Pug species to identify. Although now there is a wide variety of good field guides, it has made the process of identification somewhat easier.

ID POINTERS -A brownish-grey pug which has a conspicuous black central spot on the forewing. Ground colour is darkest at the wing base, leading edge and outer border. Various wavy cross-lines. As with a number of Pug species, melanic forms occur, which require close inspection in order to determine the ID.

FLIGHT PERIOD –  On the wing May – August.
