Silky Wainscot Noctuidae – Xyleninae Chilodes maritima – colour code

STATUS A vagrant in Derbyshire. Present status not known. Four records to 1985. Six more in the 1990’s and this specimen caught in 2008 is the most recent record.  During the period 2013 – 2018 only 4 individuals recorded, all from the south of the county. A recent report is one trapped in a garden moth trap at Breaston by Steve Thorpe in July 2022. Latest record of one trapped at Hathersage on 24th June 2023.

ID POINTERS – A slender and narrow-winged moth with leading edge of wing curved, outer edge angular and tip pointed. Forewing is a light greyish-straw colour. A silky white hind wing. All features are diagnostic. There are delicate streaks across the wing and a small row of black spots along outer edge.

FLIGHT PERIOD – On the wing June – August.
