A Mixed Weekend

After the recent onslaught of rare "Yanks" arriving at all corners of the country, this weekend was rather mediocre. In any case my bank balance wouldn't have stood the charters and petrol money required to vist Porthgwarra, Cornwall for a Hermit Thrush (didn't need it in any case); the Isle of Rum for a Mourning Dove; Unst for the incredible Cape May Warbler and Lundy for a Myrtle Warbler. Phew what a major disappointrment! Saturday 2nd November, Richard, Glyn and myself made our way over to Frampton Marsh & Gibralter Point in Lincolnshire. A fairly quiet day but some good views of common […]

ISLES OF SCILLY 2013

My annual birding week to the Isles of Scilly this October, was to be my 28th year in succession. Unfortunately it turned out to be one of the worst weeks I can remember for seeing and finding rare birds. It didn't help that very few birders were on the islands on what has been traditionally recognised as THE week and very few semi-rare birds to look at, let alone any major vagrants. A mixed bag of weather with wind directions mainly from the south, made little difference. Best vagrant bird of the week was a North American Sora Rail on the Great Pool on Tresco and […]

A Pelagic Wader and an Autumn Fall

A last minute decision Saturday morning (12th Oct), was to head off to Covenham Reservoir, in Lincolnshire for a storm blown pelagic wader, a Grey Phalarope. We had no idea if the bird was still there and the weather was foul, so even if it was, would we get any photos? Really dull low cloud, rain and wind blowing from the ENE, was ideal for migrant birds to make landfall along the east coast and later in the day we had a real surprise. We made Covenham and after a long search, eventually found the Grey Phalarope. We spent at least an […]

SHETLAND 2013

FAR REALLY ISN'T FAR  – Shetland, one of the greatest places in the UK for discovering rare birds. This year and the same crew, we continued with our previous format – A week on Unst, generally looking for our own birds, mixed with a little twitching here and there. Aberdeen Harbour – Friday evening 20th September 2013. After some birding at Blackdog, Aberdeen, in the late afternoon sunshine, I managed to find a drake Surf Scoter and we also had several Velvet Scoter amongst the large raft of Common Scoter. Numerous Red-throated Diver and Eider and a single Arctic Skua. Not a bad start. We left Aberdeen […]
