A Weekend of Local Birding.

A weekend of local birding – Having found a female Common Scoter on Friday at my local patch, I decided to get up early Saturday (14th) morning before having to sort out domestics. Staunton Harold Reservoir has held good numbers of birds in recent days with nearly 1000 geese and 600 Black-headed Gulls being present. So Saturday morning,  the female Common Scoter was still present, also a Little Egret, Greenshank and the regular adult Yellow-legged Gull, this bird is now in immaculate plumage. A real "Goose Fest" is currently taking place with 333 Grey Lags & 275 Canada Geese, the noise was incredible as […]

Rare Tern at Local Nature Reserve

Attenborough Nature Reserve lies in the Trent Valley just over the Derbyshire border in Nottinghamshire. It is an excellent reserve and often picks up some good rarities during the year. I remember the 12th December 2004, when along with three of my birding pals, we identified Nottinghamshires first SORA RAIL (see also BLOG Categories – Year 2004) on Clifton Pit here at Attenborough. So the recent arrival of a juvenile White-winged Black Tern was no great surprise and an opportunity not to be missed, only half an hours drive from home. So Saturday afternoon, 7th September, I nipped across to Attenborough to take a […]

A Holiday Encounter with a "Yankie Peep"

My wife and I have been visiting the English County of Dorset for the past five years for our annual late August holiday. We base ourselves in and around the Swanage area, this year choosing to stay at the little village of Worth Matravers. A fantastic location and a great area for bird migration. I remember well, the arrival of the first twitchable Red-flanked Bluetail many years ago in the Winspit Valley at Worth Matravers. What a day that was!! During this years visit to Dorset, I experienced a real learning curve in bird identification and at the same time, I also learnt a […]

Local Patch Update - Summer Period

Since my last update in June, here we are at the end of the summer. During July & August I managed a few new birds for the year, helping to move my Staunton Harold Year List on to 118 by the end of August. Common Tern increased to a maximum of 10 adults on the 13th July. On the 2nd July 8 Curlew flew over the reservoir and a Green Sandpiper on the 3rd July. During the summer period at least 1 adult Yellow-legged Gull has been present almost daily with a maximum of 3 adults on 23rd August. The 2nd summer […]
