Two Treats in a Day

Saturday 27th August and Glyn, Richard and myself visited two of my favourite Lincolnshire Reserves, Gibralter Point and RSPB Frampton Marsh. Gibralter Point was very much a visit of nostalgia, as I first went bird watching here some 40 years ago, when I saw my first Snow Bunting. The reserve is very different today, with new lagoons and hides and of course a new visitors centre. We had decide to venture over to Lincolnshire in the hope of maybe finding a good bird and photographing some of the hundreds of Curlew Sandpiper that had been frequenting Frampton Marsh. Well we managed […]

A New Yellow-legged Gull

I found this new 2nd winter Yellow-legged Gull at my local patch, this morning (21st August 2016). Staunton Harold Reservoir is a good place to find this species especially at this time of year. Late summer, early autumn sees Yellow-legged Gull migrating into Britain and birds are returning to their favoured wintering areas. Often young birds follow adults and sometimes they can linger for many weeks. So far this summer/autumn period I’ve seen three separate birds at Staunton Harold Reservoir, hopefully more to come and maybe a Caspian Gull at some stage. The bird shows a grey mantle, lack of […]

Just Local Birding

Sometimes when its quiet on the national birding front, it can be difficult to know what to do, if in doubt, fall back on some local birding. Thats exactly what I did on Sunday 14th August, spending a few hours during the morning at the Derbyshire Wildlife Reserve at Willington Gravel Pits. It’s usually difficult for photography here, but the reserve can often produce a few good birds, especially during migration time. This morning was no exception, as there was an obvious passage of waders, with 2 Green Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank, 4 Ruff, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Common Snipe all […]

A Day with Waders at Frampton

In recent weeks the RSPB Reserve at Frampton Marsh in Lincolnshire has been a haven for waders, with several notable species being recorded. So we decide to head off there for the day on Saturday 6th August. It was a hot day and not altogether conducive for photography. Anyhow, there was a good selection of waders, as our visit coincided with a 7 metre high tide. The lagoons were covered in Dunlin and Black-tailed Godwit. Mixed in were several Little Stint, 2 Curlew Sandpiper, a White-rumped Sandpiper, Grey Plover, Redshank, Greenshank, Ruff, Snipe, Avocet, Curlew, Lapwing, Ringed Plover and Common […]
