A second attempt at Waxwings at Allestree as the weather to-day was superb. Also managed at last to see the Derbyshire Great White Egret that has been frequenting the Willington Gravel Pit complex for the past week. However, I eventually saw the bird distantly at Newton Solney. Otherwise a fairly quiet morning. Waxwings – Allestree, Derby – Tony Davison©
Waxwings finally reach Derbyshire The invaders from Northern Scandinavia finally started to arrive in Derbyshire over the last few days. Many hundreds, maybe even thousands of Waxwings started to arrive in Britain early November. So it looks like being a "Waxwing Winter". Theses birds are stunning, especially the adult males. My first photographic attempts are below, I'm hoping for more opportunities throughout the winter. These birds were part of a flock of 40-50 at Allestree, near Derby this morning (10.11.2012). Our annual birding trip to the Isles of Scilly commenced on the evening of the 19th October. An overnight drive down to St. Just to catch our Skybus flight to St.Mary;’s on Saturday 20th October. This was to be my 26th consecutive year and our hopes were high as the weather forecast was predicting easterly winds all week. Although turning out to be a rather “Tame” week, we did see some good birds, even finding our own Olive-backed Pipit and Water Pipit. I had two Isles of Scilly ticks, taking my personal list to 290. We arrived at Blackdog, Aberdeen at around 2pm on Friday 21st September 2012. A vast flock of Scoter and Eider duck were on the sea and after some careful searching, I eventually located the eclipse drake Surf Scoter amongst Common & Velvet Scoter. There were also numerous Red-throated Diver, 2 Arctic Skua, 7 Whooper Swan at sea, several skeins of Pink-footed Geese flying south and a fly-by Turtle Dove of all things. The trip had got off to a great start. We were ready for another week, birding on the island of Unst, Shetland. The island of Unst is […]
