A rare grebe puts on a show

A winter plumaged Slavonian Grebe was discovered at Straws Bridge in Derbyshire a few weeks ago. The area consists of a small number of pools near Ilkeston. The bird then disappeared and was re-discovered only a few miles away on another small local lake at Kirk Hallam. It has remained faithful to this pool ever since and I finally cracked on 22nd March, and made the short journey to go and see it. Well what a little “poser”. A superb few days in one of my favourite places in the UK. During our 4 days we saw all the specialities. Our planning worked wonders again and we even managed 2 crossbill species. On 14th arriving at Loch Garten around 2pm, we very quickly encountered our first Crested Tits on our usual walk around the Loch. The pair of Ospreys were showing at the RSPB Centre and the female had laid her first egg early in the morning, so all was well. Gulls and Wildfowl - 3rd January & 9th January 2011

Foremark Reservoir, Derbyshire – 3rd January 2011. The gull roost held a 3rd winter Glaucous Gull and the redhead Smew was still present, also c25 Goosander and 3 adult Yellow-legged Gull also in the roost. Eyebrook Reservoir & Rutland Water, Leicestershire – 9th January 2011 – Both sites are well worth a visit in the early new year. There is usually a good variety of wildfowl often with some good semi-rarities amongst the vast numbers of birds.
