A Derbyshire `Tick'

Over the years I’ve missed numerous Spoonbills in Derbyshire. This spring I missed one at Ogston by minutes, so I was hopeful that I would catch up with one soon enough, especially as their numbers are increasing in the UK year on year. Sure enough, an immature bird was discovered during mid-morning at Willington Gravel Pits on the 25th August 2021, giving me my chance and fortunately the bird stayed long enough for me to see it. It showed well albeit a little distant on the gravel spit on the main lagoon. As is often the case at Willington, birds […]

Right Time - Right Place - Sunday 16th September 2012.

Local Patch Birding Really paid off to-day. Another early morning start at Carsington Water. After a walk around "Stones Island" and a visit to the main Wildlife Hide, we had seen very little. The regular adult Yellow-legged Gull and a few Chiffchaff and Blackcap. We then made our way to Sheepwash Hide and on arrival walked straight onto an adult Great White Egret. The bird was feeding in the bay and performed for around half an hour, long enough for me to run back to the car for my camera, before flying straight past the hide and disappearing down the […]

Local Patch Raptors - Sunday 9th September 2012

Local patch birding in my county of Derbyshire is hard work but sometimes rewarding. It is all down to the quality of birding one is looking for. In my view you cannot compare a days birding in Derbyshire, to a days birding at a coastal site in Norfolk or Yorkshire. These locations would win hands down, however there are exceptions and today was one of them. The early morning was spent at Carsington Water and a Turnstone, always a good bird in our county, a Wheatear and an adult Yellow-legged Gull were the major highlights. Yellow-legged Gull – Carsington Water, […]

A Nice Local "Find" - 7th May 2012

Local birding can sometimes be rewarding, as it was today.     Whilst scanning from platform 4 at Willington DWT Reserve, South Derbyshire, I managed to find a superb drake Garganey fast asleep on one of the small islands. A nice year tick. Plenty of common migrants about including a good movement of Swifts and plenty of Swallow, House Martin & Sand Martin. The weather is still very cold and grey for the time of year. Reed Warblers were very showy this morning but only a couple of Sedge Warbler. Common & Lesser Whitethroat were in song as were Blackcap […]
