An obliging "Horned Doucker"

Before the latter half of the eighteenth century, the Great Crested Grebe was fairly well distributed over Britain. However, by 1860, a total of 42 pairs were counted, the demise was due to its plumage becoming fashionable  in the trimmings of clothes and hats. By 1867 only one pair of Great Crested Grebes was recorded at Tring reservoirs but by 1884 there were seventy-five pairs. A rare grebe puts on a show

A winter plumaged Slavonian Grebe was discovered at Straws Bridge in Derbyshire a few weeks ago. The area consists of a small number of pools near Ilkeston. The bird then disappeared and was re-discovered only a few miles away on another small local lake at Kirk Hallam. It has remained faithful to this pool ever since and I finally cracked on 22nd March, and made the short journey to go and see it. Well what a little “poser”.
