Local Patch Strikes Again - 15th July 2012

I decide to take a walk round Staunton Harold Reservoir this morning, my “Local Patch”.     It proved to be a good move as no sooner on site I discovered two female Common Scoter. The birds were sat in the middle of the reservoir at the dam end and the first record here for a number of years. These sea-duck seem to be regularly encountered on inland waters during July. Staffs 2 - Derby 0 - 8th April 2012

A second weekend birding in Staffordshire. This time for a Common Crane that had arrived last week frequenting water meadows just outside the town of Stafford. A smart adult bird but just too distant for my camera. The area where the bird was feeding is quiet large and certainly the bird appeared to be well settled and undisturbed. A quick visit to Blithfield Reservoir, whilst in the area, is always worthwhile.
