Waders On The Move

A visit to the RSPB reserve at Frampton Marsh in Lincolnshire is always a worthwhile trip. It’s only a couple of hours drive from home, so provides an ideal place to watch migrating waders in spring and autumn. Our visit on Saturday 19th August provided a good selection including 2 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Green Sandpiper, an adult Little Stint, numerous Icelandic Black-tailed Godwit and Dunlin, small numbers of Ruff, Avocet, Redshank, Greenshank, and Ringed Plover, 4 Little Ringed Plover, at least 50 Little Egret, 5 Spoonbill, a few Swift, a Marsh harrier and 4 Turtle Dove (including 2 juveniles). A […]

One Good Tern Deserves Another

Saturday 5th August 2017 and the morning was spent at the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint, in Yorkshire. Several Honey Buzzard and Goshawk had been on view during recent days and we were not disappointed. We visited this site a few weeks ago and had brief and distant views of Honey Buzzard. On Saturday, the weather was better and the birds were better and we had at least 3 Honey Buzzard and 2 Goshawk showing really well at times. Always tantalisingly distant for good quality photos, nevertheless I managed a few half decent record shots. A juvenile White-winged Black Tern had […]

Another Inland Tri-coloured Wanderer

A 1st summer Sabine’s Gull had been frequenting the gravel pit complex at Nosterfield Quarry, in North Yorkshire, for nearly three weeks. It seems that early summer is becoming a regular time of the year to connect with one of these tri-coloured wanderers. After last years full summer adults in Alaska, then a 1st summer, gracing Derbyshire in early July, it was good to see another one of these beautiful gulls at an inland site. We decided to head off into North Yorkshire, Saturday 15th July, to see the Honey Buzzards and hopefully connect with the Sabine’s Gull, all worked […]

Bee-eaters set-up residence in Nottinghamshire

A rather belated BLOG Post, due to the length of time it has taken me to process my images from a recent trip to Iceland. First discovered around the middle of June 2017,  a total of 7 Bee-eaters were found at a small quarry near East Leake in Nottinghamshire. Remarkably and so very soon after their discovery by a local birder, the RSPB, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and CEMEX, the quarry owners, had set up a sensible watch-point, visitor monitoring system, along with Car Parking facilities that were organised with a local farmer. I must confess it did  make me wonder […]
