Local birding can sometimes be rewarding, as it was today. Whilst scanning from platform 4 at Willington DWT Reserve, South Derbyshire, I managed to find a superb drake Garganey fast asleep on one of the small islands. A nice year tick. Plenty of common migrants about including a good movement of Swifts and plenty of Swallow, House Martin & Sand Martin. The weather is still very cold and grey for the time of year. Reed Warblers were very showy this morning but only a couple of Sedge Warbler. Common & Lesser Whitethroat were in song as were Blackcap […]
Red & Green Flashes before my eyes. Spent the morning in the north of my county, calling in for Hawfinch at Cromford and eventually saw 3 – 4 birds very well. You simply can’t get enough of these stunning finches. Several Dipper were nest building along the river. Up onto the moors and several Goshawk hunting & displaying, a fine sight. A good flock of Brambling were at a traditional winter locality, about 100 all together with chaffinches, feeding on beech mast. Spent several hours at a drinking pool along Flash Lane in Matlock Forest and we soon had […]
A very poor day for photography so no new bird pictures I’m afraid. Instead a day out year ticking some of the local species around my county at this time of year. Cromford Wharf is now the traditional site for Hawfinch and eventually 5 birds gave themselves up. On the River Derwent Dipper was singing and 2 birds showed well. Also Nuthatch, 2 Goosander and a party of 14 Long-tailed Tit. Moving onto the tops at Beeley we had 30+ Coal Tit, Tree Creeper & Nuthatch at a local feeding station, also several Red Grouse on the Moor. Next stop […]
