Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing – Noctuidae – Noctuinae – Noctua janthe – colour code

STATUSA resident species that is widely distributed throughout Derbyshire and generally common. Most frequently recorded from the south of the county where it can be very numerous.

ID POINTERS – A smaller version of the Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing but can be confused with Langmaid’s Yellow Underwing. There is a greenish collar when freshly emerged this fades to brownish. The forewing ground colour is a purplish, bluish grey with a fairly prominent reddish-purple patch towards the wing tip. This patch usually has three tiny white spots running along the leading edge. Hindwing is unmarked and orange-yellow in colour with a broad black band. These features help to distinguish from Langmaid’s.

FLIGHT PERIOD – On the wing July – September.
