A Visit to the Farnes and One Good Tern Deserves Another

A decision was made last Thursday (11th July) to visit the Farne Islands off the Northumbrian Coast of England. A Bridled Tern had been found there about two weeks ago but had not been seen for a number of days, so presumed gone. Not to worry as I had seen the Anglesey bird in 1988. The Farnes are a great place, offering ample opportunity for photography and little did we know what was going to hapopen. We stopped off at South Shields first, usually a good place for terns roosting on the beach. Not to-day though and it was a real disappointment here. […]

Local Patch Update

My local Patch – Staunton Harold Reservoir, South Derbyshire, is now proving tough to pick up new year ticks. The highlights of the past few weeks have been 3 Shelduck on 9th June; the arrival of 2 Yellow-legged Gull on 12th June, a 3rd Year & 2nd Year and both seen on and off during June. A drake Mandarin has shown on and off during the month, so the female must be somewhere nearby.Good numbers of Swift during June with a large flock of over 150 birds on several days. Usually 50 or so has been a regular number most mornings. […]

As it was also a Midlands tick, I decided to go look at it. The bird had been discovered on Thursday 20th but the news was only released on Friday 21st. The bird was singing from a conifer plantation, close to a small village called Tiln, near Retford in North East Nottinghamshire. The local news was that apparently the bird had responded to tape of Icterine Warbler and showed a pale wing panel. Upon arrival […]

A SPECIFIC SWIFT !!

Trimley Marshes in Suffolk was definately the place to be yesterday the 15th June, except for me. A Pacific Swift was found mid-morning, a mega and mythical bird for many British Listers. Was this the same bird that had been seen at Spurn last week and later the same day further south in Lincolnshire? Due to family commitments, I wasn't able to do any twitching yesterday and to make matters worse, a young male Golden Oriole turned up in my county and was singing all day in Padley Gorge, Derbyshire, expletives galore, but hey ho, one has to do what one has […]
