Spurn Point lies on the English Coast of East Yorkshire, on the northern side of the humber estuary. It is renowned to be one of, if not the best, UK mainland Bird Observatory and migration watch point. Spurn has a great history of recording rare birds and insects and when migration is in full swing, many hundreds of migrants find land-fall in the area. Such was an occasion on Sunday 25th August 2013. Weather conditions on Saturday 24th and over-night were perfect for Drift Migration. We arrived at Easington just to the north of Spurn and quickly located Pied Flycatcher, Willow Warbler, […]
A great place to visit during wader migration is RSPB Frampton Marsh in Lincolnshire. You will have gathered by now that I rather like this place. Never crowded and always a chance of finding your own birds. Todays menu was an adult Pectoral Sandpiper; 5 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Spotted Redshank and plenty of Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Ringed Plover and Little Rnged Plover. Also a few Avocet were still tendering youngsters, a single Oystercatcher, Dunlin and Common Sandpiper, a few Lapwing, a calling Whimbrel and a couple of Green Sandpiper. Plenty of Little Egret were scattered all across the reserve. A very obliging Sedge Warbler […]
My first trip to Norfolk for 2013! What, I hear you say – Yes, the first time I've made a visit to the North Norfolk coast this year, shame on me.. The end of July is a good time to see numbers of returning waders and at Titchwell to-day (Sunday 28th July) there were plenty to look at. Highlights were a large flock of roosting Knot, Bar-tailed & Black-tailed Godwit, Avocet, Lapwing and Ruff. At least 15 Spotted Redshank (some still in summer plumage), 2 Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Green Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank, 2 Common Snipe, small numbers of Oystercatcher, Turnstone, Redshank,Dunlin and Ringed […]
A full summer plumaged Pacific Golden Plover was found at Rutland Water, Rutland, Leicestershire on Monday 15th July 2013. It promptly disappeared during the day, on Tuesday 16th but was relocated in the evening. The bird was still present on Wednesday 17th and so we raced off late afternoon to see it. What a stunning bird and my first full summer plumaged adult. This was a first record for the Midlands of this rare Siberian wader. Not so regular to our shores as American Golden Plover, which is the confusion species. A small Golden Plover very slim and elegant, with […]
