An Inland Sabine's Gull

Any Sabine’s Gull that turns-up inland and close to home is always worth travelling to see. They are such stunning gulls and are never easy to catch-up with. They often-turn-up after autumn gales, so it was rather unusual for one to arrive in late summer. A near adult Sabine’s Gull arrived at Pennington Flash Country Park, Greater Manchester, at the beginning of August and I kept my fingers crossed that it would hold on till the weekend. Fortunately it did and I managed to get to see it on Saturday 8th August 2015. The bird was showing down to several yards […]

"One Good Tern Deserves Another"

I spent an absolutely superb day with Terns and Kittiwakes up on Tyne & Wear on Saturday 1st August 2015. Along with Glyn, we had around three or so hours with a party of Common Tern, Sandwich Tern, one Little Tern, one Arctic Tern and a few juvenile Kittiwake. Bulgarian Butterflies 2015

During early July 2015, Barrie and myself managed a week pass-out and we made our third visit to Bulgaria in search of butterflies. We were often at altitudes in excess of 5,000 feet and the highest altitude was just under 10,000 feet on Mount Musala, the highest peak in Bulgaria. We had a few disappointments, missing several Ringlet species, Bosnian Blue and Shepherd’s Fritillary, due to the fact that they were not […]

Another Hudsonian Visitor

Another vagrant North American wader discovered in the south of England, this time a Hudsonian Whimbrel, found at Church Norton, Pagham Harbour, in West Sussex on the 9th June. The bird was still present on Friday 12th June, so RichardJ, Barrie and myself decided to head off south early on Saturday 13th June. We arrived at Church Norton around 9am, unfortunately just as it was high tide. We missed the bird by minutes as it had flown out into the middle of Pagham Harbour. So we were in for a long wait. There were a few claims of the bird […]
