2nd to Last - 24th June 2012

We were on our way to spend a few days in Rheims, France and so not to miss an opportunity, we stopped off at Blean Woods in Kent for Heath Fritillary.     One of my final two species of breeding British Butterfly left to photograph.   The RSPB reserve at Blean Woods is one of the best and most reliable sites for Heath Fritillary, however they can take some finding.   Fortunately the weather was on my side and after some searching I eventually discovered half a dozen or so specimens just perching on Bracken fronds and generally just […]

Trip to the Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria - 1st June to 10th June 2012

I travelled to Bulgaria with my good friends Anita, Barrie & Elliott Staley. Our Butterfly holiday was centred in the East & West Rhodope Mountain range located in the south east part of Bulgaria. An area of outstanding natural beauty, unspoilt and very rich in wildlife. The varied habitats that we visited were full of butterflies, crickets, grasshoppers and spiders. Many birds were also seen during the week but the main emphasis of the trip was focused on the varied selection of Butterflies that Bulgaria has to offer. During the week we managed to find nearly 90 species of Butterfly […]

At one of the RSPB reserves in Suffolk, we managed to see most of the Fenland specialities and after a great deal of patience I managed to connect with a singing male Golden Oriole, the star bird of the day. Numerous Hobby & Marsh Harrier were enjoying the hot sunshine and there were several Bittern on the wing. Most unusual, as […]

A Day at Spurn - 23rd May 2012

An invite to spend the day birding at Spurn Reserve is a no brainer. So I decided to make a stop-over as I knew it would be a very early morning start. I can thoroughly recommend Westmere Farm, Kilnsea – www.westmerefarm.co.uk – Sue & Andrew Wells made me feel very welcome. Sure enough I met Martin Garner at 5:45am this morning at the Warren, kicking off the day. There were plenty of roosting waders on the high tide and many were in summer plumage. Always good to see Grey Plover, Knot, Sanderling and Dunlin in breeding plumage. There are not […]
