Pied Flycatchers - what a muddle!! - 13th May 2012

Well, I got a real surprise yesterday, when the DNA results were announced on the “Flamborough ficedula Flycatcher”  – see  Probable Atlas Flycatcher – they pointed to nominate Pied Flycatcher!!   What !!!       I must confess I found it difficult to believe but who am I to argue against the Science. Nevertheless I am glad I went to observe this intriguing bird and all may not be over yet.  Personally I still think it is not a straight forward Pied Flycatcher. Consensus of opinion is still leaning towards an Iberian Pied Flycatcher.    Our usual team […]

Two Species to Go!! - 12th May 2012

With good weather forecast for this weekend, I was sure I had a chance of at least 1, possibly 2 of the final three species of butterfly I have left to photograph.     At Ketton Quarry in Leicestershire I was able to photograph the Grizzled Skipper this afternoon. It was difficult as I had to wait for the sun to break through heavy cloud.   With a few Dingy Skipper, Orange Tip and Peacock, it wasn’t too bad and so now down to 2 species – Holly Blue & Heath Fritillary.   IMAGES –  Nos:1 & 2 Grizzled […]

On the Chase - 1st April 2012

We were certainly in no mood for “Fooling Around” this morning!!     Cannock Chase is only around 45 minutes drive from home and offers some good birds that are relatively on my doorstep. Providing, of course, you know where to go looking for them. It is a vast area and there are many access roads leading to all corners of this heathland habitat in the middle of Staffordshire. We were soon listening to the glorious song of the Woodlark and after putting in some time, we were eventually rewarded with good views of Dartford Warbler.   Numerous small parties […]

Isles of Scilly - Sat 22nd-28th Oct 2011

My 28th consecutive trip to the “Sacred Isles”, the Isles of Scilly. What a week – 2 lifers; 3 “Yankie” passerines and 5 “Yankie” waders, plus a self found Dusky Warbler. Plenty of padders helped us to achieve 101 species for the week. Arriving on Saturday 22nd October, I was anxious to get the Northern Waterthrush, a North American warbler, very rare to Britain. A new bird for me and the first tick on Scilly for a number of years. Plenty of extremely rare birds for Britain to go for – such as Wilson’s Snipe, Upland Sandpiper and Olive-backed Pipit. […]
