Ibis and Egrets at Rutland Water

A Glossy Ibis had been frequenting Rutland Water for some days before I managed to get to see it on the 29th August. It took some finding and I eventually re-located it in front of the visitors centre, as it took to the air from behind reed beds across the far side. I also found two Little Stints, one on Lagoon 1 and one from Shoveler Hide. Several Ospreys were performing at various locations, 8 Ruff from Sheveler Hide, 2 Greenshank from Sandpiper Hide along with a Curlew, 4 Ringed Plover and 2 Little-ringed Plover. Around 8 Great White Egrets, […]

A White-tailed Lapwing at Blacktoft Sands

On Thursday 26th August 2021 an adult White-tailed Lapwing (Plover) was discovered by the assistant warden at the RSPB reserve at Blacktoft Sands in Yorkshire. This was the 8th record for Britain and a first record for Yorkshire of this species which breeds in southern Russia and west to Iraq and Iran. The Iraq and Iran birds tend to be resident but the Russian population migrates south to winter in India, the Middle East and North East Africa. It is a very rare vagrant to Europe, with the first British record in 1975 at Packington in Warwickshire. A very distinctive […]

Black-browed Albatross

During late June 2021, the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire was graced by the arrival of an adult Black-browed Albatross. Most likely to be the bird that very briefly visited the same site, around the same time last year (2020).  I had never seen this species in Britain before and managed to see it on the 30th June 2021, obtaining a few images as it briefly, but very quickly, flew right by me as I was standing on the New Roll-up view point, overlooking Staple Newk. A picture appears below taken on the 4th August 2021. A moment […]

Sea Bird City

The RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs on the Yorkshire coast is a real sea bird city. However, by late July, Early August the majority of the auks (Puffins, Razorbills and Guillemots) have left their colonies, leaving just Gannets, Kittiwakes and a few Fulmars behind. This year has seen a new visitor to the sea bird cliffs, a Black-browed Albatross. This individual arrived during late June and has summered at the site. However, when I visited on the 4th August, it wasn’t to be seen. Fortunately I had excellent views of it on the 30th June. Always a great place to […]
