A pair of Garganey were found early morning at Willington Gravel Pits in South Derbyshire. Only a few miles from home, I decided to pay them a visit and I wasn’t disappointed.

Although for most of the time they were just at the extremities of my camera lens, I managed to get a few half decent record shots of the pair courting and just generally chilling out. I do hope they stay local and continue to breed, but it is getting rather late in the season.

One of my favourite British ducks, the male is incredibly well marked. Unique among British ducks, the Garganey is a summer migrant, hence alternative names of Summer Teal, Cricket Teal and Summer Duck
