STATUS A resident that is widely distributed and generally common in Lowland Areas of Derbyshire. In the northern area of the county it is an uncommon moth. Usually found wherever there are poplar trees.

ID POINTERS – Named after the red and black markings on the hind wings. A very large moth with grey forewing with several erratic zig-zag cross-lines. Marbled with brownish-grey. The hind wing has a black central cross band and a broad outer black band. The rest of the hind wing is a pinkish red.

FLIGHT PERIOD – On the wing August – October.
