Beautiful Snout Erebidae – Hypeninae – Hypena crassalis – colour code

STATUS – First recorded in Derbyshire in 2000 – This species has expanded its range northwards in recent years. It remains a localised species in Derbyshire, with very few records, up until 2023 when it was being reported from a number of moth traps in the central & NW of the county. Latest records received – Darley Dale 2013 & 2014 – 1 trapped in a Buxton garden 14th June 2021 – Rowan Wakefield – 1 at Padley Gorge c16th June 2021 – Rowan Wakefield and 1 on 22/6/2022 from a Hathersage garden – Claire Miles. Four were trapped at Darwin Forest near Matlock on 27th June 2023.

ID POINTERS – Diagnostic snout species, triangular shaped, with a large chocolate brown panel on each forewing. 

FLIGHT PERIOD – On the wing June – July
