A Greater Sand Plover was discovered on the beach at Redcar, Cleveland on 25th August. At the time I didn’t realise, but I had only seen one previously, and that was back in the 80’s, so long overdue. I decide to go for it on 27th August and the bird was showing reasonably well on our arrival.
The Greater Sand Plover is a rare vagrant from far eastern Europe into Asia, and there has only been 17 previous records, the previous bird I saw was in Norfolk back in 1985. This bird was much smarter as it was still in summer plumage.
Also during the day a juvenile Red-backed Shrike was showing at South Gare.
