A Bit of a Hoot!!

Rain, Gales, Rain, Gales – The theme for the past week. Question – Would Barnie & Co., bring in any good sea birds? The Met Office are now naming severe UK weather systems, whatever next! With the possibility of Leach’s Petrel, we decided to head off towards the North West in hope of striking lucky. […]

Nowt Like Yorkshire Birding

A day on the Yorkshire Coast, can’t beat it. Several Black-necked Grebe had been spending time in the harbour at Scarborough and there’s the Mediterranean Gull’s at Holbeck, as well as waders at Bridlington. So that was Saturday 14th November sorted then. We had one very obliging Black-necked Grebe at Scarborough Harbour and 12 Whooper

A Second Bite at the “Craggie”

Sunday 8th November and Glyn, RichardP and myself decided we would spend a day in Cambridgeshire looking for Owls. We stopped off at Grafham Water first of all, as there had been 3 juvenile Velvet Scoter here for some time. They proved to be fairly elusive and it took us several hours and a breakfast,

A Misty Morning at Rutland Water

Sunday 1st November 2015 and a very foggy morning leaving home and heading for Eyebrook Reservoir and Rutland Water in Leicestershire. However the large flock of Avocets were quite spectacular, when every so often a Marsh Harrier would flush the flock. There can often be up to a 1000 birds on the flats, along with other waders such as Black-tailed

The Fuschia is Bright, the Fuschia is Yellow!!

A Twitch to the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides – Tuesday 13th October 2015 and the UK bird news was shaken by the discovery of a North American Wilson’s Warbler, discovered at Port Nis, on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, by local birder Tony Marr. Needless to say, it got the hearts racing of the

What I Call a “Spurn Day”

Saturday 10th October turned-out to be a typical “Spurn Day”, but we had to wait until the afternoon before the birds got interesting. We decided to walk out to the point first of all, a glorious morning and a seven mile slog there and back for a spooked Roe Deer, a Red Admiral, a stunning little

Shetland 2015

September 25th – October 3rd 2015 – Another autumn week on Unst, Shetland, staying at our usual croft at Northdale. What a great location to spend a week looking for rare birds. This year was not what I would call a classic week, yet there were still some good birds about, especially on the mainland.
