A Mixed Bag

Saturday 23rd April 2016 turned out to be a mixed bag of birds. We headed off for Spurn in the hope of finding something. All we found was cold and windy weather but the sun was shining. After a long walk out to Sammy’s from the Crown and Anchor, we managed to find a couple […]

The Kingdom of the Dipper

Derbyshire is blest with some stunning Limestone Dales that provide ideal habitat for the Dipper and of course other water birds such as Grey Wagtail. I spent Sunday 17th April with Glyn and Richard in one of the Derbyshire Dales. We had a great day, spending time watching several pairs of Dipper, including one pair

Common Birds – Boring, Boring??

I think not – in our modern birding scene, so much emphasis seems to be made on rare birds, it seems to me that we can easily pass by the common stuff. I spent a few enjoyable hours on Saturday 16th April, within 10 minutes from home, just watching common birds. I don’t think they’re boring at

Will try again when the weather warms up a little. Sand Martin and Chiffchaff are now about having arrived

Bird Notes

I’ve had a few reasonable birds this week at my local patch. On 29th March I had a Woodlark fly over the Car Park at Staunton Harold heading west at 08:45hrs, a new bird for the site. Then my first Swallow on the 30th March, my earliest Swallow for Staunton Harold and then on 31st March,

Early Bird Catches the Yellowhammer

This morning was stunning, so off early before work to my local patch. A small party of Yellowhammer have been coming to the feeding station, so as the sun was shining, I took the opportunity and grabbed the camera for an hour or so before heading off to the office. I wasn’t disappointed. A Swallow

A Trip to the Seaside

Saturday 19th March and a trip to Scarborough was on the cards. There has been a drake American Wigeon off shore at Scalby Mills, just round the corner from Scarborough, for several weeks now and it has been some time since I have seen an American Wigeon in Britain. Also a couple of Black-necked Grebe
