Common Birds – Boring, Boring??

I think not – in our modern birding scene, so much emphasis seems to be made on rare birds, it seems to me that we can easily pass by the common stuff. I spent a few enjoyable hours on Saturday 16th April, within 10 minutes from home, just watching common birds. I don’t think they’re boring at […]

A Day on the Moors

Saturday 9th April and I spent a day on the upland moors of North Derbyshire. Weather was superb and what a great place to be, stunning scenery and some special birds. Our timing was spot on as Ring Ouzels were just arriving and we had at least 6, possibly 8 birds at one location. Wheatear

A Quiet Weekend

A fairly quiet weekend, chance to catch up on domestics. Went looking for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker this morning, no luck but at least I know there in the wood, as a female was seen last week. Will try again when the weather warms up a little. Sand Martin and Chiffchaff are now about having arrived

I wasn’t disappointed. A Swallow

A Trip to the Seaside

Saturday 19th March and a trip to Scarborough was on the cards. There has been a drake American Wigeon off shore at Scalby Mills, just round the corner from Scarborough, for several weeks now and it has been some time since I have seen an American Wigeon in Britain. Also a couple of Black-necked Grebe

An American Visitor at Rutland

Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th March and opportunities presented themselves to clean up on a few good birds. First of all a trip up to the north of the county for Dipper, Grey Wagtail, Goshawk and Hawfinch. Unfortunately Hawfinch proved difficult and there was no show. Then a trip into Leicestershire, to Rutland Water for a

How to Spend a Non-Alcoholic “Happy Hour”

On Sunday 6th March, I spent a pleasurable hour at my nearby National Trust Country Park at Calke Abbey, Ticknall. During the winter there has been plenty of activity at one of the bird feeding stations in the park. Having recently returned from a hectic business trip to Hong Kong, I can’t think of a
