National Moth Night – 10th September 2015

This weekend is National Moth Night, covering evenings of the 10th,11th & 12th September. So to mark the weekend this was top be my 6th garden moth trapping session of the year. Few surprises but there was one, a Red Underwing, a garden tick. Not in the trap however, I noticed it on the side […]

Chasing Sea Birds

The weekend weather indicated opportunities for potential sea bird passage down the east cost. Saturday 5th September and there was a strong North Westerly wind blowing as we arrived at Filey Brigg, on the Yorkshire Coast. After a precarious trek down to the Hide, and I mean precarious, I began my first proper sea watch for

“Thou shall hev a Fishy, when the boat comes in”

Saturday 29th August and I spent the day in Northumberland, with Glynn and Richard, at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. What a fantastic place for waders and Terns. The coastal area of this small seaside town is a great place to see Roseate Tern. As they leave the breeding grounds on Coquete Island, the adults bring their youngsters to

Moth Trap 26th -27th August 2015

The fifth trap this year, trying desperately to catch a migrant, Bordered Straw would be rather nice!! A rather cool and breezy night, with some light rain, think this was the culprit for a relatively poor trap. Still lots of Large Yellow Underwings though. Seems more this year than in previous? Norfolk Kick Starts My Autumn

Sunday 23rd August and a trip to the North Norfolk coast was in order. A good move as this visit, to one of my favourite areas of the country, kick-started my autumn birding. A visit to Titchwell provided the usual array of waders including, 4 Little Stint, Wood Sandpiper, 4 Spotted Redshank, Black and Bar-tailed

Moth Trap 20th-21st August 2015

Not been moth trapping as much as I would have liked this year, this was only my fourth garden trap of the year. A very warm and still night, so conditions were about perfect. What I didn’t expect was literally a trap full of Large Yellow Underwings, over 100 in all. My largest ever count

An Inland Sabine’s Gull

Any Sabine’s Gull that turns-up inland and close to home is always worth travelling to see. They are such stunning gulls and are never easy to catch-up with. They often-turn-up after autumn gales, so it was rather unusual for one to arrive in late summer. A near adult Sabine’s Gull arrived at Pennington Flash Country Park,

“One Good Tern Deserves Another”

I spent an absolutely superb day with Terns and Kittiwakes up on Tyne & Wear on Saturday 1st August 2015. Along with Glyn, we had around three or so hours with a party of Common Tern, Sandwich Tern, one Little Tern, one Arctic Tern and a few juvenile Kittiwake. The beach area at South Shields
