Egret brightens up a dull day – 12th June 2011

A mixed bag to-day – first thing this morning it was like a summers day, clear blue sky, sun shining so a walk around Calke Park at Ticknall seemed like a good idea.

First surprise of the day was the sighting of two separate Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, along with 3 Green & 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers. 7 singing Nuthatch; 15 singing Wren; 2 singing Song Thrush; 1 singing Goldcrest;

6 singing Blackcap; 3 singing Garden Warbler; 6 singing Chiffchaff; 1 singing Willow Warbler and

1 superb Little Owl. Also seems to be plenty of young Great Tit & Blue Tit about..

By 11am it was grey, dull, overcast and raining, typically June!! The next surprise was the pager “Bleeping”, a Great White Egret in Derbyshire, at Carr Vale. So after a phone call we were soon on our way to see it. A rare bird in my county so a nice local find for one of the Carr Vale regulars.
