The Long Staying “Harley”

Saturday 14th March 2015. After a very rough crossing on the way back from our week on Shetland, it was nice to get our feet back on “Terra Firmer” and head straight off to Seaton Park and the River Don, to try and find the Harlequin Duck. A first winter drake has been present on a small stretch of the river for many weeks but has not always been reliable, especially during recent weeks. After nearly two hours searching, After meeting a local birder, I finally found it 500 yards downstream from its favourite areas. A stroke of luck really as I had almost given up on seeing it. My fourth Harlequin Duck in Britain and a nice year tick. Beginning to get some colour but not as good as the drakes I saw at Barnegat Jetty in New Jersey, USA last year. Now a full summer drake in Britain would really be worth seeing. Year List now on 149
