The Wood Warbler

One of my favourite British warblers is the Wood Warbler, which sadly is now Red Listed, following long-term declines of more than 50%. Breeding here in the UK, is now restricted to largely oak (Quercus) woodlands, and they are becoming ever more scarce across much of southern and eastern Britain. This particular bird was extremely confiding, and spent several weeks in early June, in an oak wood in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park.

The song is an incredible series of trills and high pitched whistles, and can be heard some distance away from where the bird sings. Once they set up a territory, they are very site faithful, as they sing away in the hope of attracting a mate. I was fortunate to have several of these photographs published in British Birds Magazine (July 2022 – Vol 115), which featured the Wood Warbler.
