A week on the island of Madeira - 27th August 2012

A week on Madeira to re-charge the batteries and to relax and take things easy for a few days.   Not so easy when the hotel gardens were full of Monarch Butterflies and two species of Blue Butterflies that were incredibly difficult to photograph. I had also lined up 2 afternoon seabird and Dolphin trips to try and get a couple of sea bird lifers. I had booked the Dolphin trips from the UK through Portugal Sport and Adventure (www.portugal-sport-and-adventure.com) and Alexandra Cleaton was extremely helpful in the organisation process. She also managed to get me on an afternoon trip with Madeira  Wind Birds(www.madeirawindbirds.com) which […]

On the Chase - 1st April 2012

We were certainly in no mood for “Fooling Around” this morning!!     Cannock Chase is only around 45 minutes drive from home and offers some good birds that are relatively on my doorstep. Providing, of course, you know where to go looking for them. It is a vast area and there are many access roads leading to all corners of this heathland habitat in the middle of Staffordshire. We were soon listening to the glorious song of the Woodlark and after putting in some time, we were eventually rewarded with good views of Dartford Warbler.   Numerous small parties […]

Business Before Pleasure - 25th March 2012

A hectic business schedule meant I had very little “Birding Time” this weekend.   So made the most of the time I had by spending a few hours around Melbourne Pool, one of my  local patches. Good for photographic opportunities of common birds and also nice to see at least 6 pairs of Herons on nests and one pair of Oystercatcher, which I’m sure must be a new site species. One Chiffchaff and a pair of Grey Wagtails were also of note.    IMAGES – No:1 adult Coot; Nos: 2& 3 Adult Coot in threat posture; No:4 Wood Pigeon; Nos: […]

Winter Returns - Briefly - 18th March 2012

The weather this morning was a complete contrast to last weekend.   Upon arrival at Carsington Water this morning, we were met with a freezing cold mixture of snow & heavy rain. The front lasted for well over an hour, then grey but very calm conditions and Carsington turned into a “Mill Pond”.    The day did however produce my first spring migrants for the year.   We were hoping for a Kittiwake dropping in but no such luck. In fact apart from the long staying Great Northern Diver, the numbers of wildfowl were very low. Five Goldeneye; 5 Oystercatcher; […]
