Isles of Scilly - Sat 22nd-28th Oct 2011

My 28th consecutive trip to the “Sacred Isles”, the Isles of Scilly. What a week – 2 lifers; 3 “Yankie” passerines and 5 “Yankie” waders, plus a self found Dusky Warbler. Plenty of padders helped us to achieve 101 species for the week. Arriving on Saturday 22nd October, I was anxious to get the Northern Waterthrush, a North American warbler, very rare to Britain. A new bird for me and the first tick on Scilly for a number of years. Plenty of extremely rare birds for Britain to go for – such as Wilson’s Snipe, Upland Sandpiper and Olive-backed Pipit. […]

Final “Jewels” of the Butterfly Year - 14th August 2011

The traditional visit, to a superb Chalkland Hillside reserve, brings the butterfly year to a close. Aston Rowant is simply superb, despite the M40! We had good numbers of Silver-spotted Skipper, these little jewels were darting about everywhere even though the weather was not perfect. Also good numbers of Chalkhill Blue and surprise of the morning, a perfect male Adonis Blue. The first time I’ve seen one here. Still a few Small Skipper & Brown Argus on the wing. The Chiltern Gentian was just coming into flower and also numerous Nodding Thistle and Carmine Thistle. The day flying micro moth […]

The weather was not ideal and it wasn’t until the afternoon when the weather improved, that I eventually captured eyes on this stunning butterfly. My first British Swallowtail was rather tatty, it was nectaring on Buddleia. Shortly after this one disappeared, I discovered a second specimen and this time it […]

A Day at Durlston - My last British Skipper - 31st July 2011

The best time for Lulworth Skipper is late July into August and one of the best places to see them is Durlston Country Park.   This species is not easy to find as they live in small colonies scattered along the cliff tops of the Dorset coast. Even more difficult when the sun is not shining. Eventually after a good we came across a small colony which were very obliging. A beautiful and subtly marked little butterfly. The Lulworth Skipper was a new butterfly species for me taking my total to 62 for Britain.    I now only have Swallowtail […]
